Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) is a nonprofit, founded in 1965, that empowers teenagers and young adults to develop leadership skills through training and service in Latin America.
AMIGOS offers summer opportunities for Volunteers ages 16 to 25 to live with host families in Latin America to carry out various community and youth-led projects (from constructing environmentally-friendly stoves to teaching children's rights through art projects).
47 years ago, AMIGOS was founded on the belief in the power of leadership by youth. In the words of our founder: "Young people are just waiting for a challenge. If you give them responsibility, an opportunity to do big important things, they will always meet the challenge." Since that first summer in 1965, over 20,000 young people have risen to the challenge and traveled to Latin America as AMIGOS Volunteers.
In Summer 2012, AMIGOS will offer 13 project options in 10 Latin American countries.
