Description

We are a small community-based organization dedicated to conservation of the precious natural resources of Utila, Honduras.  Utila is home to many species of plants and animals, including the endemic endangered "Swamper" iguana, and our surrounding coral reefs are visited frequently by three species of sea turtles (all species are endangered) and by whale sharks (the largest fish in the world).

BICA provides environmental education to the adults and children of the local community, performs patrols around the island and co-manages the protected areas of Utila with the municipality and the Honduran forestry department.

Programme info

We are seeking highly motivated, independent and hard-working individuals to assist in all aspects of our conservation efforts.  We accept individuals of at least 21 years of age, with a preference for workers, graduate, undergraduate and post-graduate students with experience/studies in the environmental fields, but we are open to all concerned citizens with a passion for the environment.

Our primary program areas include environmental education, community outreach, monitoring (sea turtle, fish, invertebrates, coral and mangroves) and re-forestation.

More info

Volunteer fee is $350/month and includes housing, wireless internet and water.  Housing is provided onsite in dorm style rooms with 1 to 3 persons per room with shared bathrooms and kitchen.  Travel expenses and food are not included.  The kitchen is complete with appliances/utensils for cooking.  We recommend budgeting $300/month for food and entertainment.

Several volunteers elect to take dive courses while in Utila and some take Spanish language courses as well.  We ask that volunteers take into account the time period of their volunteer commitment while scheduling these activities.

We require that volunteers stay a minimum of 1 month (due to the time necessary to become fully oriented to the island and organization.) Due to visa restrictions, most volunteers do not stay longer than 3 months.
