Description

ATRAVES is an international non-profit that builds connections among communities, organizations and people in Nicaragua and internationally to support development, health and educational efforts in Nicaragua. ATRAVES was founded in 2004 by Nicaraguan educators, community workers and one U.S. volunteer. Since then, ATRAVES has grown into a strong organization that is becoming an increasingly effective instrument in the success of the communities it serves.

ATRAVES mobilizes human, financial and material resources to support education, health and development programs in Nicaragua. ATRAVES does so specifically by:

  • Linking these initiatives to resources that communities cannot otherwise access;
  • Placing, coordinating and educating international volunteers and delegations;
  • Creating and maintaining an international network of people in solidarity with Nicaragua and its poor communities; and
  • Mobilizing our network to become a powerful support system.

ATRAVES has shown that this model is highly effective in Nicaragua. ATRAVES currently works with communities across the Pacific side of the country.

Programme info

ATRAVES partners with a number of different autonomous organizations, institutions, and groups around Nicaragua. We also have projects with which we're more directly involved, these being projects located in two specific communities; one being Barrio William Galeano, a shanty town located on the outskirts of Managua and the other San Juan de Oriente, a small town of artisans in the Masaya region.

                Most of our work falls into three general areas: community development, education, and health. Along the community development line, we’re currently working with a cooperative of artisans (ceramics) in San Juan de Oriente. Volunteers who work there teach classes in basic computer skills, accounting, marketing, English, etc. Our education work generally consists of pairing volunteers with primary schools where they lead after-school activities, and teach English, computers, or whatever else their Spanish skills/professional experience allows. We also organize professional development sessions for teachers from the schools we partner with and involve volunteers with these whenever possible. Finally, we’ve been increasingly involved with health projects in William Galeano. We’ve hosted a few months of free clinic service, make home visits to elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses, and offer health education workshops and community health worker training. We involve volunteers in this work as appropriate. Recently a student chapter of Engineers Without Borders completed basic construction for a new clinic building in William Galeano, and we are attempting to complete the construction, furnish and equip the building, and fund operations.

More info

ATRAVES charges a one-time $200 individual volunteer fee which helps us cover our program costs. We also host delegations, which are priced on a completely different scale. Volunteers generally fundraise to cover their project costs, which vary with what they plan to do (we help with pre-arrival budget planning), and cover their own on-the-ground transportation. All ATRAVES volunteers stay with local Nicaraguan host families in safe, traditional, lower-middle class houses in the community in which they’re placed. Volunteers pay families $15 a day and in return are provided with a room, bed, clean sheets & towels, utilities, and three meals per day.
