Description: The Guayabillas Animal Rescue Centre is located on a hill overlooking downtown Ibarra in northern Ecuador. Guayabillas hosts volunteers from around the world who wish to work with the animals and educate people about the importance of conservation.
Volunteers help feed and care for dozens of animal species, including some which are rare and endangered. When animals are released back to the jungle, as is often done, you will be able to go along for the trip for free.
Over 200 animals have lived at the centre since it's founding in January, 2005. Most animals are brought to the centre after they are found being traded illegally, and most have been released back into the jungle. Several dozen species live in Guayabillas at any given time. Permanent residents include 2 lions, 3 galapagos tortoises, a variety of monkeys, lory parrots, and several sloths.
The mission of the rescue centre is not only to rehabilitate and release the animals, but also to educate people about the importance of conservation and not having wild animals as pets. Schools will often attend the centre and receive presentations about the importance of saving endangered species.
The principal activities are cleaning the cages, giving the food to the animals, to care animals, to cure any wound, and to educate people about the importance of conservation and not having wild animals as pets, in Guayabillas and the schools
