Unfortunately, fraud and theft are common in a lot of poor countries. Therefore, it is important that you take some precautions before you go and while you are there.

Before you go, try to

 

  • Get some local currency, and remember that some currencies will need to be ordered a week in advance
  • Write down your credit card numbers, including expiry dates and keep it somewhere other than your wallet.
  • Make sure your card is valid in the country you are going to.
  • Make a note of your credit card's emergency cancellation phone number/s.
  • Take enough money to cover emergency situations.
  • Check if there are cash points/ATMs where you are going. If you are staying in a small town, you may have to go to a neighbouring city to find a cash point.
  • And when you are there

  • Get familiar with the currency, make sure you know what the different value notes and coins look like.
  • Don't carry too much money around with you, try to limit it to what you may need for each particular excursion.
  • Don't keep it all in your wallet -Don't put all your eggs in the same basket, it may be a good idea to keep some of your money in your shirt pocket.
