Eat and Drink PDF Print E-mail

Remember that other countries may have different bugs and bacteria, which means you could easily become ill if you eat or drink the wrong thing. Extra care will need to be taken if your are volunteering in a developing country.

While common sense is king, it can be easy to overlook details.. This list is by no means extensive, but it will provide a good base of things to think of and get you set on the right track.

  • Drink bottled water. If you do not have access to it, make sure to boil any tapwater before consumption.
  • Make sure your food is fresh and freshly cooked and hot. Don't under cook food as this may mean that you will be exposed to a greater range of bacteria.
  • Avoid ice, be it in drinks or otherwise. If you want ice, use bottled water. When buying drinks from restaurants or other such establishments, ask for no ice (even if they tell you its from bottled water).
  • Avoid uncooked fruit and veg unless you can peel them yourself.
  • Think twice when you feel the urge for a cooling ice cream, and any dairy products. Make sure they have been properly refrigerated and pasteurised.
